Svartbäcken
My husband's parents,
Eivor and Sven Ryberg, became Quakers in the 1940s. They left jobs in Stockholm
in 1950 to farm and with a vision to create a Quaker retreat center. The farm
Svartbäcken became what they had hoped, providing a way of life with
agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry. Svartbäcken as a spiritual center
also became a reality. Swedish Quakers purchased a lot adjacent to the farm in
the late 1960s and set up a more modern facility than what Eivor and Sven had
been able to offer in their rustic farm home for children's camps, Quaker
conferences and retreats. The facility has served Quakers well for children's
camps, gatherings and retreats. It has also been used by Quaker internationally
and by many non-Quaker groups seeking a quiet facility close to nature. In 2024
my husband Mats and I became the owners of the facility and are continuing to
make it available in the same spirit to individuals and groups.
